Who We Are

What is our purpose?

Heyward Street United Methodist Church is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.  United Methodists exist to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Heyward St UMC embodies the UMC mission by connecting Christ and Community.

Located in the middle Shandon neighborhood, Heyward St UMC was envisioned by our faith ancestors as a neighborhood church. For decades, many of the congregants walked to worship as church, school, and home were all within a few blocks of each other.

Heyward St UMC continues to be a vibrant part of the Shandon neighborhood by operating a preschool for ages 2-5, by partnering with community organizations to share space in our facility, and by participating with local helping ministries such as Epworth Children’s Home and Killingsworth.

We value being an active, engaged part of our local community.

"Love Boldly. Serve Joyfully. Lead Courageously.”

UMC’s Vision Statement

What do we believe?

United Methodists work in connection with United Methodists around the globe in the mission of transforming the world by putting faith and love into action.  As believers in the Risen Christ, United Methodists participate in worship to include baptism and communion and they participate in sharing the abundant, untethered love of God in word and action.  United Methodists believe God loves all people and all are welcome in the United Methodist community of faith.  A description of United Methodists in eleven words goes like this; United Methodists receive Jesus’ grace personally and extend Jesus’ grace communally.
