Ways We Engage

HSUMC engages our local community to nurture faith development, provide resources for the vulnerable, and partner with local helping organizations. In addition to financial contributions, we donate hands on skills as well as resources. All are welcome to join us in the ways we engage.

SC Young Reader’s Library

SC Young Reader’s Library opened its doors in 2023. Decorated with SC’s state bird, flower, tree, and iconic Palmetto moon, the library encourages our youngest children to explore the joy of books.

United in Faith Book Club

United in Faith Book Club meets quarterly to discuss a book chosen from the United Women in Faith annual book list. Book themes include social justice, equality, equity, or theology. Book club participants discuss the book from the viewpoint of “How does this book engage my faith?”

Share Our Space Opportunities

HSUMC partners with support groups, music groups, and individuals to provide space for meetings and events. Our large fellowship hall boasts a stage, ten round tables, seventy chairs, and a large space for hosting birthday parties, family holiday events, or baby showers. Our conference room provides ample seating for a gathering of 10-12 for a book club or craft / art making event. Please contact us if you’d like to share space.

Koala Pantry

Koala Pantry provides meals, snacks, and convenience items for on campus students at Columbia College. HSUMC donates supplies to keep the pantry stocked so students can focus on academics.

Epworth Children's Home

Epworth Children’s Home, located just blocks from HSUMC, serves children, youth and young adults. A multifaceted organization with on site housing, foster care, a resource closet, and counseling center, Epworth impacts the lives of families. HSUMC has supported the ministry of Epworth Children’s Home for more than fifty years.

Killingsworth

Killingsworth, located just a few blocks from HSUMC, serves women in transition from domestic violence, unsafe housing, or incarceration. Annually, HSUMC hosts a table at the Killingsworth Gala to raise funding for the program. And recently, HSUMC hosted a paper drive and donated paper towels, toilet paper, plates, etc. HSUMC has supported Killingsworth for over forty years.

Welcome Table

Welcome Table serves a sit down, restaurant quality meal to Columbia’s food insecure. Hosted by Washington Street UMC, Heyward St UMC has partnered in this ministry for more than six years. In addition to serving food and beverages, volunteers are needed to assist with distributing comfort items such as socks, ponchos and reading glasses.

Taco Tuesday for Salkehatchie Missioners

Salkehatchie hosts summer camps for young adults who complete needed home repairs in the Columbia area. HSUMC provides the Taco Tuesday dinner for the group. This annual event is a volunteer favorite.
